Stefan is a phytoplankton ecologist with a keen interest in optical observation technology, ranging from in situ measurements to remote sensing, based in laboratory, field, and numerical studies. Cyanobacteria detection and ecophysiology are of particular interest. His current work focuses on the use of earth observation platforms to produce water quality information for inland and coastal waters, including algorithm development, calibration/validation studies, and large scale data processing. Collaborating with modelling and socioeconomics experts at PML he also contributes to the development of Earth Observation solutions for aquaculture and environmental risk mapping.
