Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIOST), Korea

In April 2011 we signed an agreement with the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI), now known as KIOST and Korea’s main marine and polar research institution, to establish a joint science office, based at our lab in Plymouth. The PML-KIOST office was formally opened in November 2011 with the aim of conducting joint research projects in remote sensing and marine ecosystem modelling and facilitating exchange between both organizations.

Kyoto University

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed in October 2018 with the Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability, Kyoto University. This MoU will explore opportunities for enhancing collaboration and sharing experiences, networks and knowledge within the area of remote sensing science.

Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), USA

Signed in 2011 our Memorandum of Understanding with MBARI brings together expertise in the areas of marine biodiversity, long-term observations, predicting and estimating the impact of environmental change on marine ecosystems and policy development.

Nansen Environmental Research Centre, India

In June 2015 we entered a mutual agreement with NERCI in order to develop cooperation in research and education. The agreement was initiated under the auspices of the Framework 7 project INDO-MARECLIM and focuses on marine ecosystem studies, monsoon and ocean variability, climate change, coastal zone management and societal issues.

Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA)

We have a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2015 with NIVA to facilitate and promote scientific collaborations in estuarine, coastal and marine sciences.

Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans (POGO)

POGO serves as a forum for leaders of major oceanographic institutions around the world to promote global oceanography, particularly the implementation of international and integrated global ocean observing systems. In addition the POGO Secretariat has been hosted by us here in Plymouth since July 2008.

Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA)

PEMSEA is a project of the Global Environment Facility, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme and, in 2006, we were one of the first non-governmental organizations to become a member. PEMSEA focuses on sustainable management of the ocean and coast in East Asia. Our involvement extends to having a seat on the PEMSEA Partnership Council; being co-convenors of an East Asian Seas Congress in 2012, and our scientists being invited to give keynote presentations and lectures at PEMSEA conferences.

Sargasso Sea Commission

We are collaborating partners with the Sargasso Sea Commission, which encourages and facilitates voluntary collaboration toward the conservation of the Sargasso Sea.

University of Cape Town, South Africa

The Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2011 builds upon our existing relationship at the research project level. The principal strands for collaboration are Earth observation, benthic (seabed) ecology, biogeochemistry, molecular biology, socio-economics and ecosystem modelling.

National

Joint Weather & Climate Research Programme (JWCRP)

We are partners in this programme, a joint initiative between the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the UK Met Office, which aims to ensure that the UK maintains and strengthens its leading international position in weather and climate science, and hence in weather and climate forecasting and provision of advice for policy.

Marine Environmental Data and Information Network (MEDIN)

MEDIN is a partnership of UK organisations committed to improving access to UK marine data. The network promotes sharing of, and improved access to, marine data. As a partner of the network we are demonstrating our commitment to best practice marine data management.

Marine Science Co-ordination Committee (MSCC)

PML’s Chief Executive has a seat on the UK cross-government committee which aims to coordinate scientific knowledge, resources and communications to support marine policy decisions. Our Director of Science sits on the MSCC International Working Group, which plays a crucial role in coordinating UK marine science on the global stage, and the UK National Decade Committee for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS,  www.oceandecade.org). Various other staff have roles on further MSCC subgroups, e.g. the Communications Working Group, and MSCC partner initiatives, e.g. the UK Integrated Marine Observing Network (UK-IMON), as well as contributing to these such as to the Marine Climate Change Impacts Partnership (MCCIP, www.mccip.org.uk), which  provides advice on climate change impacts and the resulting adaptations required around the coast and seas.

National Partnership for Ocean Prediction (NPOP)

We are a founding partner of the National Partnership for Ocean Prediction and work together with the Met Office, theCentre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science and the National Oceanography Centre to develop and promote the application of world-leading marine products and services to stakeholders, with a focus on national and public benefit. The science partnership brings together world-class expertise from the UK's leading marine and oceanographic research centres to integrate models, observations and scientific understanding to produce the best information and advice about the marine environment and engage with stakeholders to understand their needs and requirements.

Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)

At a national level we have a close alignment with the NERC and are proud to be a delivery partner for NERC funded National Capability. Our NERC Long Term Science Single Centre programme is delivered through the Climate Linked Atlantic Sector Science (CLASS) project which is coordinated by the National Oceanography Centre and contains three underpinning science activities, the Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT), the Western Channel Observatory (WCO) and ERSEM model development. We also contribute to several NERC Cross Centre National Capability projects including UKESM, LOCATE, ACSIS and ORCHESTRA and a NERC ODA project, ACCORD.

UK Integrated Marine Observation Network (UK-IMON)

We are part of this group working towards ensuring a sustainable, resilient and fit-for-purpose ocean observing system around the UK regional seas.

Regional

Marine Research Plymouth

Marine Research Plymouth is a partnership between three leading science organisations in Plymouth; Plymouth Marine Laboratory, the Marine Biological Association and the University of Plymouth. Marine Research Plymouth will encourage joint investment in research appointments and support the sharing of capabilities, equipment and facilities. It will ensure Plymouth is even better-placed to attract further funding for initiatives that can advance knowledge and understanding of the oceans.

Marine Technology Business Centre

PML is working as part of the Marine Business Technology Centre (MTBC) to assist innovative companies to develop new marine technologies. The MTBC is a gateway for accessing comprehensive research and development support as well as cutting-edge facilities and expertise. Providing services up to the bleeding edge of advanced marine technology development, the MBTC is supporting Devon-based SMEs through research, testing, proving and production. Located in the UK’s only marine-dedicated Enterprise Zone, Oceansgate, in Devonport, Plymouth, the partnership is led by Plymouth City Council and includes PML, the University of Plymouth, the University of Exeter, and the Marine Biological Association.

UK Met Office

The south-west of England, is also home to the UK Met Office, with which we have very strong links, including through the National Centre for Ocean Forecasting and Joint Weather & Climate Research Programme.

University of Exeter

We have formed a strategic alliance with the University of Exeter, renewing a Memorandum of Understanding with them in July 2013, which focuses on the sustainability of the ocean. Working in collaboration, scientists from our two organizations bring together expertise in coastal and shelf sea science, including predictive modelling, relevant expertise in climate change and understanding what the seas provide for society and how society is changing them. We are also a core partner with the University of Exeter in the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funded GW4+ Doctoral Training Partnership.
